Chiroque Family
Humberto Chiroque from the Micaela Bastidas Ward in Piura Peru is married and has three children. He has worked for years as a carpenter but was very discouraged because of the low wage that he generated from that job. So in 1991 he and his wife decided to make and sell "ceviche" (raw fish marinated in lemon juice, onion and hot peppers) as street vendors near the city market. This business enabled him to better support his family but like almost all of the Peruvian micro entrepreneurs they were applying and keeping the "one more of the same" business strategy. Therefore there was not any differentiation between his ceviche cart and the other ceviche carts of his competitors. Then Humberto took our Microenterprise Development program and he says that with the help of one of our Business advisors he elaborated a business plan for the first time. He and his wife also participated in our 32 hour workshop called Fundamentals of Small Business Administration where they learned about marketing, business strategies, budgeting and operations. In September 2005 he received a loan from Eagle Condor for $1,200. He created a logo and printed the name CEVICHERIA AL PASO CHIQUI using yellow and blue colors and keeps his cart the cleanest on the block. He bought new utencils and pans. He also installed a small car stereo to play popular cumbia songs in an attempt to make the experience more pleasant for his customers. They have now hired two new employees and they all wear bright blue and yellow uniforms. Since November their gross income as increased more than 100%. He is grateful for the support and training that he has received from Eagle Condor Humanitarian that has helped him to improve his business and become more self reliant. More Stories...
